Coming back after all those faces last month with this week’s challenge from Laura Harms. The challenge was to use the tangle pattern Charlie by Erin Olson. It’s a new one for me. Never used it before. Though in the tile below, I didn’t really use it as much as making it more of a […]
Whew! Did these today first thing and last thing. With lots of errands in between. And with them wrap up the second 29 Faces Challenge I’ve participated in. I can’t recommend this exercise enough! Both times I’ve learned and accomplished things I never thought I could. And met some pretty neat artists along the way. […]
Sometimes ya just gotta put away the photos and just draw. Portraiture just wasn’t happening for me today. Tried twice. Despair hit. Put the photos away. And breathed. Through my fingers and onto the page. This is the result. Used mostly hard pastels. ‘Cept for the white. It’s super soft. On trusty newsprint. The blueness […]
Here’s today’s effort in the faces challenge. Re-imagined my pirate pic without the hat. Mostly because I didn’t want to draw it. (lazy artist!) I think the idea to gently curve the imaginary eye-line helped. They visually “feel” right to me anyway. (or at least closer) The nose and chin however… well one’s a tad […]
I am happier with today’s effort. Worked hard to get the planes of the face right before shading. I like the “chiseled” look. More shading would soften it up. Oh! And I’m using hard pastels on newsprint. The eyes still feel “off”. I think that is because I am making the line that runs through […]
Did this week’s challenge (curvy gridlock) as a little artsy pick-me-up from today’s face challenge effort. Its a bit of a mash up. Had no clue where to shade it. Almost didn’t. I think a second color of ink would have added a lot.
Well, I had hoped to improve upon yesterday’s success. While the mouth is closer, that eye on the right (though more structurally correct on its own) is too low. But it only took me 40 minutes to do this. So I am getting faster. Maybe today’s effort wasn’t a total loss.
A quick two-fer today! The best thing about this… NO measured grid! On my second try, I eyeballed a few key lines (both placement and tilt) and went from there. Can’t really describe how happy that makes me. Have never been able to successfully do that before. Coming up on a busy week so the […]
Chugging along. Feeling rather off today and it shows in this effort. Shadows around the mouth and nose are just off. If I spent more time… yeah, I know. Moving on…
Today was full of good friends and good conversation. But not a lot of drawing time. So rather than stress, I let myself doodle while watching a movie with my daughter. Used water-soluble graphite on a scrap of watercolor paper. Oh and a touch of charcoal to get the darks really dark. It is maybe […]
