Getting back into the swing

I guess I should have expected that after being on a near two week “vacation” it would take a bit of doing to get back into our usual routine.

Today I was just frazzled all day. The house looks like a bomb hit and that seems to make it hard for me to think clearly. When did that happen anyway? I haven’t always been like that.

The morning was spent with chores followed by leaf pile leaping. The blurred person in the picture above is me. The pile that day was big enough that I could “superman” into the pile without serious (and painful) consequences. (though getting the leaves out of my hair did hurt a little) Then we went to the park for the PreK playdate. Jessie and the boys aren’t playing to well right now so we may look into something else for a bit. (even though I really like talking to the moms)

We did however manage to get a few subjects done. Our Gratitude-tree-a-la-MamaKohl is up. I’d show you a picture but the camera battery is out of juice. Even got our first leaves up. I plan on each of us putting up a leaf every day. We’ll see if I can keep that up. Today Sam was thankful for dinner (more on that in a mo), Jessie was thankful for movies, Dad was thankful for family and I was thankful for having a home (even if it is a mess). ;)

Dinner: I was a bit adventureous and tried what I was sure only Dad and I would enjoy: egg drop soup, asian salad and sushi rice shapes topped with ham and cheese (kinda like red-neck sushi :D ). To my surprise, the kids loved the soup and fosushi! Asking for way more than I had made. (We even had some of the fosushi for lunch topped with egg and cheese.) This is the first time Sam has really enjoyed rice. Man! I can’t wait to get a tamago pan and try making tamagoyaki.

We also made a first attempt at doing dictation properly. Thanks to Barb’s hosting of the Charlotte Mason Blog Carnival, I feel like I’ve got a better handle on it. Sam surprisingly chose Beowulf. The passage I picked mentions Hrothgar, which he immediately recognized from the Eragon books. Sam picked “Hrothgar” as a word he might have trouble with (we tried mentally photographing it) and I added it to a half lined page with “Daneland” and “ogre.” We defined those words. Tho’ “Daneland” gave us a bit of trouble. Nowhere could I find a neat definition so we put down “where Hrothgar’s people lived.” (dad suggested that one) With the space at the top Sam immediately, and without prompting or instruction, drew a crown.

Math was done last today. We were reminded why we usually do that first. The powers of concentration required simply do not exist after lunch.

Some day… Something I really want to do with Sam… is sewing. It is nearly impossible to find pants that fit him well. Maybe if he helped me sew his pants he’d also learn how to sew in the process.

Hmmm… maybe I’m more of a CMer than I think. ;) Just read a Hearts and Tress post that mentions “useful crafts.” Sewing would count, don’t you think?

Ok. I’m off to bed. It is midnight-thirty. A week and a half of living like a night person has reset my clock.
