Leaving the Nest

Former homeschool students reflect on their educational experiences

“Seth Anthony grew up in rural North Carolina, where the nearest public school was an hour’s drive away. So his mother, who had worked as a teacher, decided to homeschool him. When Anthony reached high school age, his mother began taking a chemistry course at North Carolina State University as a prerequisite for entering pharmacy school. His mom would bring home her assignments, and they would do the chemistry problems together. “Homeschoolers have a tendency to turn all sorts of situations into learning situations,” Anthony says.”

My older two are 19 and 21 years old and they were homeschooled mostly. They both decided not to go away to college but stay at home, go to college, and work. They both love homeschooling and in fact, my daughter helps me homeschool her two younger brothers. She teaches Spanish and sometimes special art projects.

Homeschooling just becomes a way of life and it seems to filter down to the kids and their feelings towards education. Mine tend to self-educate with things they want to learn. I try to structure the school day so they have plenty of room to expand on any subject that catches their fancy. Even my youngest who is 11 will find a topic and ask to do extra research on it and I find him there at the computer for hours just reading and absorbing. Want to know something about the Persian Gulf War? That is his new interest. I never knew so much about the Middle East until the last month or so. I can now fill in a map of the Middle East and I couldn’t do that before.

Anyway, I think homeschooling with your kids with the idea that they will need to take some responsibility for what they learn over time, is a great experience.

Thanks Barb! I am trying to gently encourage that responsibility with my son. Next year he will have a list of assignments to do and will be doing more of them on his own (I hope).

We have a university very close to us, I certainly wouldn’t mind if he went there. ;) Right now, he is convinced that he will live on campus or have his own apartment. At 9yo, he may change his mind (a few times) before he gets to college.
