All Inked

Finished inking today! Have I mentioned lately how much I love working with real vellum?!?
All Inked

I modified the pencil draft a bit since my last post. I added a hammer in the upper right corner and a feather shap (it will be red) as a line filler. I’ve been toying with the idea of trying to incorporate a small red feather into the scrolls I do as a way of pictorially signing them. I guess I could have used a cinquefoil.
Next, I am going to put a red tint on all the places I plan on guilding. The gum arabic is already softening. Most of the guilding will be small dots here and there. I am debating if the bar across the top and down the left will also be guilded. I may do it half red and half blue with white work on it. Hmmmmmm…..

Scroll Progress

Oh. My. Gosh. Calliging on real vellum is like eating the smoothest chocolate. Oh soooo addictive. I’ll never go back to bristol! I hope calliging on the perga is as enjoyable. I can’t afford to do everything on real vellum. Here’s the scroll so far, the name has been blurred to protect the innocent. ;) Pencil and Ink

The inking went a lot faster than I expected. I don’t know I’m necessarily good at ‘gothic book’ or if I’m just really bad at insular magiscule (which is what I was trying with Eilidh’s scroll). LOL! I should have put vertical lines in there every so often to help with the ascenders and descenders. But regardless, I am rather happy with the calliging.
I’d originally thought to do an initial cap where the dragon’s head is, but it wasn’t working out like I wanted. Couldn’t find a good example of a letter “T” to help out either. I’ve never seen a dragon done in this way but, drawing on the advice given me at QPT to inject more creativity into my work, I decided to try it.

Hey, Mikey! He likes it!

Bonus points if you know where the subject line comes from. ;)
The new history lessons seem to be working very, very well. I had only planned on doing history twice a week. So far Sam asks to do it first in the morning and doesn’t want to stop at the suggested places. I know it is only the 3rd day of trying this out. But, if it continues, I’m going to have to plan farther ahead! Oh, and buy the book so I can give this one back to the library. LOL!

First Scribal Assignment

I have my first ever assignment! Woohoo! Ok, I’m being silly but still I am excited.

A large and lovely piece of vellum has been entrusted to my care for this project too. I am thinking of doing something like this from the Burnet Psalter. Oh, and I have the text too! If all goes smoothly I may do gold leaf, we’ll see.
So, I gotta start practicing my book gothic (I think that’s it anyway) and see how tiny a space I can fit it all in. I always have so much trouble with that. Someday I hope to be good enough that I just *know* how much space I need. LOL!

I think that’s all the details I can give about it. If I post progress shots, I’ll have to remember to blur out the who and what. ;)
The nice thing about Calontir scrolls, there doesn’t have to be two huge seals on the bottom taking up the last 3 inches of space! Calontir hangs their (smaller) seal from an inkle loomed cord at the bottom of the scroll. Of course, that additional space seems to be needed for longer text award text. ;)

Our Monday

5:30 alarm goes off. I don’t think I got out of bed until after 6 though.

6:30 a.m. Turn on coffee pot. Set out breakfast. Fix Bob’s lunch. Bob and I eat breakfast.

7:30 a.m. Get kids out of bed. Jessie is usually up by this time. Wake up Sam. Sam takes Kirby out for a piddle walk.

8:00 a.m. Kids eat breakfast. I empty and fill dishwasher. My back hurts this morning. I need to put DTRO on it!

8:30 a.m. Everyone upstairs for morning routines. Put eyedrops in Jocy’s eyes. She really resists this morning. Thankfully there’s only a few more days of treatment.

9:00 a.m. Downstairs for exercise and laundry time. Sort laundry that has come down the chute. Switch current loads. There wasn’t much laundry so I playe with Kirby while Sam exercised. Sam complained again that the treadmill is soooo boring. He has no other suggestions, so I suggest a book on tape during this time. Or maybe I’ll just read from our evening book. (Eragon right now) That would be cheaper. ;) Sam likes this idea as long as I’ll still read to him before bed too. Sam read from his history book while I tried to exercise. My back hurt too badly so I sat on the heating pad next to him. We discussed what he read and I wrote down the notes (this time).

10:00 a.m. Back upstairs Sam is drawing pictures from what he read. I take Jessie to sit on the potty. She draws while brother does the same. We read another spread in the history book. Sam dictactes notes to me. I help with some of the wording. He draws a map and some items from the spread.

11:15 a.m. We’re done with clay. It was some pretty neat stuff from Michael’s called “Dry Hard.” Feels like real clay. I got the terra cotta colored stuff.

11:30 a.m. Sam takes Kirby out while I clean up. Sam makes his lunch, dogs-n-biscuits. He colors pokemon pages while Jessie plays with some water in the sink and I finish lunch prep. Take Jessie in to potty again. So far her diaper has stayed dry today. She insists she’s ready for underwear… from the underwear store she adds. ;)
12:00 p.m. I have Sam remove the dogs from the oven using the oven mitts. This is a first. He is very pleased with himself. We sit down to eat. My back is really hurting. I wish I knew what I did to it.

12:30 p.m. We head outside. The temp is over 50 today so we need to get out! I had first thought to go to Bear Creak. But at the thought of hefting Kirby’s crate around, my back impolitely declined. I need to dump kitchen scraps in the composter too.

1:00 p.m. We come in from outside. Sam starts his reading. I change Jessie’s diaper (I have no idea when that happened!) and get her down for a nap. I think I’ll rest my back rather then doing dishes at the moment. :(
1:30 p.m. Sam and I start on Math Mammoth: Multiplication 1. A lot of it is review as I expected. But there were a couple of lightbulb moments, so I’m satisfied.
2:00 p.m. Jessie isn’t sleeping. I give her a couple books to read in her crib to buy Sam and I 15 more minutes. We review what we did.

2:15 p.m. Sam takes a brief break and I get Jessie up. She reminds me that I promised hot chocolate after quiet time. So I fix some. Can’t be breaking promises, eh? ;)
2:30 p.m. DH calls to check on me. :) I realize I forgot to unwrap the triops tank this morning and the temp within is waaay over what it should be. One is still barely moving. Oops. I restart the Laundry. Sam takes Kirby out for a potty break. Jessie is dancing to the music channel and drumming on metal measuring cups.

3:00 p.m. *sigh* that break was longer than I expected. Oh well. Moving on to spelling (dictation of rules while he writes them in his book). Jessie colors a Diego page (all purple) and informs me she had a dirty diaper. The clothes washer is making a beeping noise. A pause/restart seems to get it going again. I really need to check the owner’s manual. (I even know where it is!) *sigh* Sam finishes his spelling exercise while I change the diaper.

3:45 p.m. We get started on our last subject for the day, grammar. Sam is bummed that he will mis his show today (pokemon). Jessie wants to play. I need to start cleaning the kitchen so that I can dirty it up while I make dinner. ;) Jessie decides she wants to watch noggin. I try not to use the TV much but Sam is feeling the frustration so I agree. Glancing in the triops tank, I notice one is still alive.
4:15 p.m. Sam is toast. He worked hard today. We’ll finish grammar tomorrow. I need to get started on dinner, “make your own burritos.” The tortillas are already made, so all I need to do is shred cheese and cook the beef.

4:30 p.m. Jessie smashes her hand in the gate. No blood, she’s fine. The washer is beeping with an error again. I take some of the clothes out to see if I can coax it through the end of the cycle. *sigh* I really don’t wanna deal with a broken washer! For some reason that reminds me I need to call the orthodontist to make a consultation appointment.

5:30 p.m. Ahhh! Dinner. I get to sit down a bit. DH calls to say his run was a bit longer than intended. ;) Given the temps outside, I knew that would happen.

6:30 p.m. my WDH does dishes while I go downstairs to sit on the heating pad and watch Nemo with Jessie. Sam does his evening treadmill time.

Well, it is 9:30 p.m. now. After dinner, time still goes into double-hyper-drive. I enjoyed the time on the heating pad while Jessie watched Nemo and Sam played PokemonCrater. I am trying to not let evenings like that happen often, where were all sedentary and not really interacting. Tomorrow evening will be a tech-free one. I’m holding Sam to his desire to do that 3 times a week. ;)
I hope you enjoyed reading about our day. I had fun typing it and realizing that we do indeed accomplish a lot in one day. I’ve been reading accounts of other homeschooling days and thought it would be fun to do one myself.

Ok, I’m turing off the computer and hitting the shower as soon as I do this final save. G’Nite!

A Few Quiet Moments

Sam and Bob are out building a snow fort… and throwing snowballs I see. LOL!
Jessie is down for a nap. Kirby and Jocy are watching the boys out frount along with me. Aside from an occasional whine from Kirby, the house is peaceful and quiet. I don’t often get moments like this.

Me, I’m at the kitchen table working on next weeks assignments and next year’s curriculum. After The Well Trained Mind again, things have been really clicking. I can see, if you will, where we need to go. I like they way they’ve laid out the binders for holding and recording work accomplished. It also doubles as review to go back over them since they’re really well organized.

Well, quiet time is over. The boys are coming back in. :)

Happy Valentine’s Day

To my darling husband:

Friends always are we
My source of strength are you
Ta gra agam ort!

An Unplugged Evening

We did not watch a movie tonight. We usually do but since Sam and I had been talking about watching less TV I decided tonight would be our first “unplugged” night.

First we all played our whistles and I practiced on the recorder a bit. Wow! The fingering is weird to me. Not at all predictable like the tin whistle. Then Sam and I played charades for a bit. He loves it. Didn’t think to get out Twister. Oh, well. Next time.

One thing Sam & Jess both loved, which surprised me, was singing. I started teaching them the songs I’ve been learning with the SotSS Music group. Sam didn’t want to stop and so we sang as we went upstairs for a bath. I just never know what is going to spark interest. Sam and I agreed that Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights are to be our “unplugged” nights. My fingers are crossed that we hold to that. I really enjoyed this evening.

Earlier today I braved the newly fallen snow (several inches of it) to take Jocy to the vet for her FeLV booster. Found she has conjunctivitis. Thankfully the feline version is not contagious to other cats or humans! And got her scheduled for a spay next month. I will REALLY be FREAKIN’ GLAD when the two cats are out of heat. Nuff said there.

So today was much better than yesterday thankfully. :)

And Ended Like This

My wonderful, caring, supportive, handsome, darling husband brought me goodies of dark chocolate after reading my entry today. So I’m off to enjoy a relaxing shower and dive into bed. Tomorrow will be a better day. :)
Have I mentioned just how wonderfuly caring, supportive and handsome my husband is lately? *VBG*

It started like this

5:30a.m. “Mom, I had a bad dream.”

6:30a.m. the alarm goes off (My butt had just hit the bed again after dealing with the 5:30a.m. alarm)

6:45a.m. “Mommmmmmmmmmm, I have a peepeeeeeeeeeeee!”

8:00a.m. Jessie’s first time out

8:15a.m. Jessie’s second time out

9:00a.m. Jessie gets a time out in bed. (I stopped counting time-outs at this point.)
12:15p.m. I find out my tea order was sent to the wrong address… again!

12:45p.m. I’m eating chocolate.

We do not have enough chocolate in the house today. :( This is a very, very bad thing.

3:45p.m. Jessie just woke from her nap and seems a little more agreeable. After learning he can’t watch TV until 4pm, Sam starts to play his tin whistle. :) (I do a bit of a happy dance here) We just had a discussion about his TV time. It will be decreasing soon. I never should have let either of them watch so much TV. Now I have to start taking it away. Not completely… though I’m sure that is the way it feels to them. *sigh*

Time to start working on dinner… after I eat more chocolate. ;)
